Creating Ads with Pizzazz!

After writing and editing, the next biggest task for a writer is to promote their work. You have to let people know about it if you’d like them to read it. Different authors tackle this in different ways. Some do blog tours or arrange to be a guest blogger on fellow author’s blogs. Some authors take out ads on Facebook, Amazon, and Bookbub. My go-to is to promote on social media. I mainly use Facebook and Twitter. I send out a minimum of twelve tweets a day, and I’ve joined a number of Facebook groups where authors can connect with readers who enjoy reading my genre of romance novels.

In order to make my posts more appealing I create ads, and in an effort to keep costs down, I take advantage of services offered on free websites. I love Canva. It’s a website which is set up to help with graphic design. They have templates to use that are pre-sized for ads on different social media platforms, banners, and post cards. You can use some of their free ideas or upload your own images – including book covers, graphics, and backgrounds. It’s easy to add text to jazz it up. I’ll use my story’s tagline, take a quote from a review, or a quote from the story itself. And then with a click, you can download the graphic to your computer – all for free! If you’d like to use your own images, you must pick ones that are royalty free for commercial use with no attribution required. You can’t just grab any picture from the web and assume it’s okay to use. Most are copyright protected. I search Pixabay for images. They have a wide selection of photos and vector graphics to choose from.

I don’t have a design background, but I have fun creating different ads. And because it’s free, I can change them up whenever I have a new idea. Here are two that I made for the books in my Perfectly Series.

Award-winning author Linda O’Connor started writing romantic comedies when she needed a creative outlet other than subtly rearranging the displays at a local home décor store. Her books have enjoyed bestseller status. When not writing, she’s a physician at an Urgent Care Clinic. She shares her medical knowledge in fast-paced, well-written, sexy romances – with an unexpected twist. Her favourite prescription to write? Laugh every day. Love every minute.
